On July 12, 2007, only an unlucky 13 days after waiting in line for the popular iPhone, it was stolen, sort of...
On my way out of a fast food establishment, my iPhone fell out of my brand new SPECK case on to the parking lot. I had no idea it was missing until about 10 minutes later. That's when I panicked.
I ran back to the restaurant, and it was gone. No where in sight. None of the friendly employees offered up any assistance whatsoever.
I decided to call my iPhone to see if the the finder was a thief or waiting for the rightful owner to contact them. After a few attempts with no answer, there was finally a voice on the other end. They offered their "name" and location and arranged for me to meet them to return it. Once I drove 20 miles to for this meeting, I was informed by others at the location that "Fred" didnt work there and they knew nothing of the meeting. WIth my head hanging low, I headed back home. On my way, I received a call, from MY number on the borrowed phone that I used to reach the suspected thief. "Fred" informed me that he had made up the name and location, but he had all intentions of returning the "cool phone". He then proceeded to ask what the reward was!?!?! Without answering that question, I asked if their was a way for us to meet up so I could get my iPhone back. They said they would discuss it and call back to the borrowed phone that a friend was nice enough to let me use.
Not only did he not call me back, he started sending me text messages from MY iPhone telling me how cool my music was and how amazing the phone was. At this point, I wasn't sure what my next move should be. I called AT&T and had them deactivate my account and reactivate it to my old ROKR phone. This left me with ZERO forms of contact with the thief, but it would also temporarily lock them out of using the phone.
At this point I contacted the authorities. They were no help at all, they said that since it was FOUND not STOLEN, then they couldn't do anything. I figured it was a lost cause and decided to forget and move on. Obviously, I can't!!
